Making pens on a lathe is a craft I learned from my father when I was 14 years old. It is a craft that I have progrssively gotten better at over the years and is something that I truly enjoy doing. The pens that I create are each one of a kind and make great gifts or collectibles.
When I make pens I take alot of time to hand select the finest materials to make the most striking pens possible. Almost all of the wooden pens that I make are stabilized woods to add to the pen’s beauty and durability. Stabilized woods are created by taking the natural wood and vacuum infusing the cellular structure of the wood with an acrylic resin. After the wood has been stabilized it is much harder and denser than the wood in its natural state. When turning pens from stabilized woods it is possible to achieve a smooth as glass finish on a wood surface. Stabilized pens will outlast their unstabilized counterparts ten fold. In the past I sent all of my hand selected wood out to be stabilized by outside an outside company, but have invested in the technology and equipment and now do all of my stabilizing in house.
I always have a display case full of pens to choose from in my shop, but can also custom make them to fit customer’s requests.
